Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about character naming conventions, platform gamertag limits, commercial usage rights, and our zero-knowledge cryptographic engine.
Naming Rules & Legality
Can I trademark or copyright a character name created with this generator?
Short character names and fictional monikers are generally not subject to copyright under US and international intellectual property law. However, distinct characters with extensive backstory and traits can be protected as creative works. You can freely use generated names in your novels, tabletop campaigns, and video games. Before using a moniker as a commercial business name or brand trademark, run a search on the USPTO TESS database to verify no prior commercial trademark conflicts exist in your industry class.
Are generated names 100% royalty-free for commercial video games and books?
Yes. Every moniker produced by NOMIX is entirely royalty-free and public domain at generation. NOMIX claims zero ownership, license fees, or attribution requirements over names produced by our client-side phonetic algorithms.
What happens if a gamertag violates platform terms of service?
Major platforms including Xbox, PlayStation Network, and Discord automatically reject profanity and hate speech during account setup. If an offensive or impersonating tag bypasses automated filters and gets reported, moderation teams issue forced name resets (replacing your tag with a generic placeholder like 'Player1234') or temporary account suspensions. Repeat infractions risk permanent account termination.
Platform Username Constraints
What are the exact character limits across major platforms in 2026?
Character limits vary significantly by platform: Xbox allows up to 12 characters (or 15 for legacy accounts). Instagram permits 1 to 30 characters (letters, numbers, periods, and underscores). TikTok allows 2 to 24 characters (letters, numbers, underscores, and periods, but periods cannot be at the end). Discord display names range from 1 to 32 characters, while unique usernames are 2 to 32 lowercase alphanumeric characters with periods or underscores. Roblox allows 3 to 20 alphanumeric characters, and Minecraft Java allows 3 to 16 alphanumeric characters plus underscores.
Why did Xbox assign numbers with a hashtag (#) to my new gamertag?
In 2019, Xbox adopted the modern gamertag system. If you choose a name that someone else already claims, Xbox appends a 3-to-4 digit numerical suffix (for example, 'Valkyrie#1842') so multiple players can share the same display name. The suffix displays in smaller font in system menus and games that support the modern Xbox identity specification.
Can I change my gamertag for free on Xbox?
Microsoft grants one free gamertag change when you first transition from an automatically assigned system tag. Every subsequent gamertag change costs $9.99 USD (plus local sales tax) directly through your Microsoft account billing settings.
Algorithm & Generator Mechanics
How does NOMIX run without an API backend or database?
All linguistic datasets, phonetic syllable banks, and grammar combiners compile into compressed static JavaScript bundles at build time. When you click Generate, your web browser executes the selection algorithm locally in device RAM in under 20 milliseconds with zero server pings and zero network latency.
How does the Name Combiner blend two words phonetically?
The combiner detects vowel boundaries, syllable weight, and consonant clusters in both input names. It creates portmanteaus using five distinct blending strategies: head-tail fusion, interlocked syllable weaving, vocalic boundary grafting, suffix transposition, and phonetic overlap matching. Nonsensical tri-consonant clusters and unpronounceable stops are pruned before display.
Why do you use Web Cryptography (crypto.getRandomValues) instead of Math.random()?
Standard JavaScript Math.random() relies on pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) algorithms like xorshift128+, which are prone to statistical clustering and non-uniform distributions over small samples. The Web Cryptography API draws entropy directly from underlying operating system hardware noise (such as CPU clock jitter and thermal sensors), providing unbiased, cryptographically uniform random distributions.
Privacy & Offline Access
Do you store my custom wheel lists or combined names on a remote server?
No. All custom entries, giveaway contestant lists, and favorite names remain strictly within your local browser sandbox and localStorage. NOMIX operates on a zero-knowledge architecture: we have no database, no user accounts, and zero remote tracking endpoints.
Can I use NOMIX tools while offline?
Yes. Once any page loads in your browser, the complete generation script and syllable data reside in local memory. You can disconnect from Wi-Fi or travel on an airplane and continue generating names, spinning decision wheels, and blending words without an internet connection.
